Fear of Glenn Beck Behind Shirley Sherrod’s Firing

ACORN, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Andrew Breitbart, Cheryl Cook, CNN, Glenn Beck, Shirley Sherrod, USDA, White House, zero tolerance

Is this what the powers that be in Washington have sunk to?:

“Sherrod told CNN that the White House urged her to resign Monday afternoon after the video clip surfaced.

“They harassed me,” she said. “I got three calls from the White House. At one point they asked me to pull over to the side of the road and do it because you are going to be on Glenn Beck tonight.

[…]

Sherrod said the White House calls came from Cheryl Cook, USDA deputy undersecretary for rural development. “The administration was not interested in hearing the truth. They didn’t want to hear the truth.”

And this? From Cook’s boss, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack

“The controversy surrounding her comments would create situations where her decisions, rightly or wrongly, would be called into question making it difficult for her to bring jobs to Georgia…Our policy is clear. There is zero tolerance for discrimination at USDA and we strongly condemn any act of discrimination against any person.”

So federal government employees like Shirley Sherrod can be smeared by edited video tapes sent by an anonymous source to a well-known right-wing purveyor of doctored video tapes (see ACORN) Andrew Breitbart. They can lose their jobs without one shred of evidence or one second of investigation into whether or not the accusations are true. All because of adherence to a stupid-ass zero tolerance policy (as are all zero tolerance policies) where right or wrong doesn’t matter, just make it go away so it doesn’t show up on the Glenn Beck Histrionics Hour? What a bunch of weak-kneed, pants-wetting cowards.

Also, regarding this from the agriculture secretary; I may have been born at night, but it wasn’t last night.

“Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack this afternoon took responsibility for firing an official, Shirley Sherrod whose appearance on video recalling her behavior toward a white farmer drew charges of racism, and whose immediate firing drew suggestions that the administration had over-reacted to an edited video clip. A White House official told me just now that the White House backs Vilsack’s decision — but that it was Vilsack’s alone. The official said the White House — contrary to the Sherrod’s charge — did not pressure the Department to fire her.”

Bullshit. This high profile of a firing done this quickly isn’t done by a USDA deputy undersecretary or even the Secretary of Agriculture without being run by somebody at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Shirley Sherrod is owed two things. First and foremost, her job back. Immediately. Secondly,  apologies from everyone involved. Both should come as quickly and as publicly as was her hasty dismissal. Let’s also hope a lesson has been learned here. When Breitbart releases a video and Fox News cranks up their RNC propaganda machine, will somebody please check out the veracity before the condemnations and firings begin?

The End is Near: Glenn Beck is the Voice of Reason

OK, it’s official, we are through the looking glass on the treatment of suspected terrorists. Glenn Beck is the voice of reason and sanity. Yes, you read that right, Glenn Beck, reason, and sanity all in the same sentence. On Fox and Friends yesterday, Beck said of Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistani-born American citizen arrested in the attempted Times Square bombing:

“He is a citizen of the United States, so I say we uphold the laws and the Constitution on citizens. If you are a citizen, you obey the law and follow the Constitution. He has all the rights under the  Constitution. We don’t shred the Constitution when it’s popular. We do the right thing.”

Vodpod videos no longer available. The award for the most extreme, knee-jerk (emphasis on jerk) reaction comes from Joe Lieberman. He proposes taking away the citizenship of those who are “affiliated” (whatever that means) with foreign terrorist organizations when they are “apprehended and charged.”

My own Senator finds that “interesting”:

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the head of of the GOP’s Senate campaign arm, is open to Lieberman’s idea. “I’m interested in Senator Lieberman’s approach. He is one of our leading members when it comes to national security issues and I would be interested in exploring that. I think at some point an act of war is a treasonous act, which could be a basis for relinquishing one’s citizenship,” he said.

I propose that we take away the citizenship of those who advocate that we take away the citizenship of others. I think that might solve the problem.

Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh

Speaking of right-wing whackos, here’s a couple more. Glenn Beck said this about the Reverend Joseph Lowery’s benediction at President Obama’s inauguration on Tuesday;

“America is with you today, Mr. President. And you’re right, we are all tired of the partisan bickering, the racial divides, the greed and the corruption. There are many people in this country who didn’t vote for you, myself included, that actually want you to succeed. My family has been down on our knees for the last month praying for you and your family and your safety. You may be fascinated to learn that many of us don’t hate minorities. That we don’t want to starve the poor. And we’re perfectly fine with brown sticking around.”

Tired of the racial divides? Don’t hate minorities? No problem with Latinos? Mr. Beck’s memory is a short one.

“Every undocumented worker is an illegal immigrant, a criminal and a drain on our dwindling resources.”

“I’ve got a quick message for illegal aliens if you happen to be watching. You better start packing your bags. And to the politicians in Washington who are soft on illegal immigration, start packing up your office, because when the terrorists strike, which they will, and we find out that they’re here illegally from some other country, we will be telling all of you to get the hell out.”

“Somebody comes across the border in the middle of the night, why are they doing that? Really, three reasons: One, they’re terrorists; two, they’re escaping the law; or three, they’re hungry. They can’t make a living in their own dirtbag country.”

But not to be outdone, the Grand Poobah of the Organization of Big Mouth Blowhards, Rush Limbaugh spewed this about his hopes and dreams for the Obama administration:

Somebody say something about the Republican Party reaching out to minorities? Pistol-packin’ mama?
